The methods and tools used in making violins have changed little in 300 or more years. Steel technology has given us finer and more durable edges but it’s still a hand that controls the blade. Electricity does some of the work that apprentices used to do and lights the workspace in the place of candles or lamps but the carving is still done by hand. A CNC router can reproduce an exact shape over and over but it doesn’t know when the balance of stiffness and flexibility is right.
